This quilt reminds me of a river....water running over rocks, pebbles and sand so I'm calling it 'Up the River'.

Up the River!
The wonderful V at Bumble Beans is hosting a 'Wave Runner' Quilt along that I have joined.
At first I was a little concerned....cutting into my beautiful fabrics with a rotary cutter and NO ruler?...but I am a perfectionist, how can I do that? I watched with much interest as V showed a couple of wave runner quilts she had done, and then posted a video tutorial of how to make these interesting quilts. So with V's faith in me, I set off to search my stash for the fabrics I wanted to use.
I love my Kaffe shot cottons so I had to include some of those, also an Amy Butler solid (the pink one, Amy's solids are simply gorgeous!). I threw in a couple of Kaffe prints and my favourite Anna Maria Horner fabric Zinnia Fortune. Once I got the hang of slicing into my fabrics without my ruler, I was hooked. This method is so releasing and easy and fun!
I love seeing what patterns and shapes come out of this freehand way of cutting strips and sewing them together.

I am SO impressed Cathy! I would be worried that a finger would be sliced off without the ol' ruler!
Wow Cathy, I think that's my favourite so far and the green makes it. I did a class in this technique and it is a lot of fun.
I am seriously intrigued!!I've tried sewing curvy strips before but the results were binned immediately!!
Good for you for working outside your usual square.

Up the River is beautiful. Terrific color combo. It's fun to try new techniques and have such success.
Love your choice of fabrics, fabulous combination. Not sure if I can do wavy either, but might have to give it a go - your quilt is a great inspiration.

That is turning into a beautiful quilt Cathy. I know what you mean about having to cut straight lines with a ruler - it is quite difficult to just let go.
Your quilt is beautiful and the technique sounds intriguing, I'll have to try this one!!

Cathy, I have been following along with v's posts. I am blown away with your version. It is just gorgeous. Of course, by adding anything Kaffe just makes it extra special! Love it!!

I've been very tempted by those waverunner quilts! It's been fun watching all the different quilts put together by the quiltalong -- they are all turning out great! I've been really loving how it looks with all solids, but now you're showing how awesome it looks with prints (well, a combination really). Very pretty, Cathy!

It's really quite lovely! You've inspired me (again) to try something I've never done before. I, too, am a perfectionist and just cannot imagine cutting into fabric without a ruler. I'm going to put this on my "to-do" list. THANKS for sharing.

This is the first "wave" quilt I have ever seen, and I am in awe!! What freedom you must have felt cutting in such a free form manner.....this is definatly on my list of must try!!
I was tempted to use prints in mine but then opted for a solids only...maybe my next one! Love how it came out!

i don't know if i'd be able to hack right in with no ruler at first either... but what a beautiful result!!
