The wonderful half square triangles

Between all the giveaway winning going on around here there has only been a little stitching done. However I have finally finished my Half-Square-Triangle-Flea-Market-Fancy quilt top....

I had so much fun with this one. I was hugely inspired by two other gorgeous quilts I had seen in blogland, the first one was from the wonderful Red Pepper Quilts...

Rita blogged about this stunning quilt here. Her layout is so very unique and clever, I knew I had to make a similar one as soon as I saw it.

The second quilt that inspired me was from Ryan of I'm Just A Guy Who Quilts. He had made this gorgeous doll quilt, I simply love the aqua and raspberry colours, set off by the linen. You can read about this quilt here. Ryan is in the process of making a larger version of this one, I can't wait to see that!

The fabrics I used for my quilt were from my stash of Denyse Schmidt's (fabulous) Flea Market Fancy range. A range we flea market fancy freaks are hoping will be reprinted one day! As I don't have her whole range, I also added in some of Sis Booms toile from her older Girlfriends range. This toile (called Nuala) is still one of my favourite fabrics, with the gorgeous birds and little bugs all over it. The Linen was from Sew Mama Sew and was an Essex linen/cotton blend in Putty.

Playing with the half square triangles is so much fun. I decided to have a scrappy look for the diamonds, with the a one colour square in each centre.

My points don't match perfectly, but it's good enough for me.

Since I made this quilt I saw that Andi from Patch Andi fame has been playing around with half square triangles too. I'm sure they are addictive. Check out her beautiful quilt below, and see her other fun layouts here.

My thanks to Rita, Ryan and Andi for their generous permission to show their wonderful quilts on my blog, and for the inspiration their quilts have given me. Has anyone else made a half square triangle quilt? I'd love to see it. xo

I'm starting to make an HST quilt now through this quilt-along: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1066616@N23/; however, we are using value changes instead of using a solid. I love both methods, though, and really want to try using gray one of these days. I see it more and more online, but the last two fabrics stores that I visited and looked at solids, the only color they didn't seem to have was gray. I love and have been very inspired by Rita's quilt, too, and have to look at it in my Flickr faves every so often. Your quilt is fabulous! I envy you those Flea Market Fancy Fabrics.

Cathy, Your post is making me want to get my stidio done so I can get back to work on my HST quilt! Working with Essex Linnen/Cotton is my new favorite.

Your quilt is gorgeous! Did you add it to the Flea Market Fancy Freaks Flickr photo pool? I'm sure they would love to have a picture of it. There is such a push to get a reprint of the whole line done. It was loved by so many people.

Thanks for the link!

I did decide to create a HST quilt after seeing Rita's. I tried to put my own spin on it. Her quilts are so original and inspiring!

I have a HT quilt on my list to make but won't get to it till next year... It is a pattern from a mag and nothing as fancy as this! (but I love it anyway and still making it!!)

That's a great design! I like the how the bright triangles play against the subtle grey.

Yesterday, I read about a group of fabric designers that did a triangle exchange. More, wonderful variety from a simple half square triangle.

This quilt is not just beautiful....it is stunning..delicious...gorgeous....I could go on and on. I think I am in love....literally. I love that you used a color to do the sashing instead of white, and the little triangle squares in the center....not to mention all the FMF fabric!! It is all around a perfect quilt. This is one of those must do inspirations!!
