A Couple of UFO's

Jacquie over at Tallgrass Prairie Studio came up with the wonderful idea of becoming UFO free by the new year. The idea is to join with her to finish off any UFO's you have lurking around your house by the end of this year, thereby starting the new year with all UFO's completed! I do have a few UFO's in my cupboard (who doesn't?) but I just know I am not going to get these finished in the next 7 weeks (yikes, only 7 weeks til 2010?!!). I thought I would dig them out and show you anyway, perhaps this will encourage me to have a stab at getting them closer to becoming finished!!

My first UFO is called Mulberry Leaves from the gorgeous book Mulberry Lane by the talented Teri Christopherson of Black Mountain Quilts.

I fell in love with this gorgeous quilt the first minute I saw it and knew I had to make it exactly the way Teri had done. Stitching on the 316 leaves in needleturn applique proved to be a challenge, but I knew it would be worth the effort in the end.

I love the central block, so simple and yet so pretty.

I adore toile fabrics and this one is gorgeous. The bird and flowers remind me a little of Dr Suess illustrations.

And speaking of toile...my second UFO is another needleturn applique on gorgeous toiles called Pretty in Plaid. I did this quilt as a BOM when I was still fairly new to needleturn applique and wanted a quilt with plenty of applique to practice on. Although the blocks are the same as the original quilt, I did change the layout around a bit. If you haven't recognised it yet, this quilt if from the talented Piece O' Cake girls from their book Contemporary Classics (published 2002 and available now only as a downloadable book).

These four applique blocks gave me so much joy with their bright, cheery colours stitched onto these wonderful toiles.

Plenty of gorgeous curves, circles, and points to practice my applique skills.

I do have a few more UFO's tucked away which I will drag out soon to show you. I'm hoping this will help motivate me to get them finished.

How many UFO's do you have hidden away in your cupboard? xo

UFO-free...but in what year? 2015, maybe? :-)

I suppose I have 2 UFO's, but then what is the difference between a WIP and a UFO? Maybe one of mine is really just a WIP....

That would be a tall order finishing off ufo's. I love the quilts you've shown, I was looking for a nice red or raspberry toile just recently but couldn't find one so settled for blue. Your's are so lovely. I would never had guessed that many leaves on the first quilt. The piece o cake quilt is worthy of a finish too. Good luck.

Your applique quilts are SO beautiful! I should pull out my hand applique project and work on it. It's a "A.D." project meaning it will get done "after death" when someone else finds it. LOL.

Good luck Cathy...
I am trying to finish some off, but I don't think I'll make it by the New Year!
Love your quilts!

I have too many UFO's to count! But I did pull one out today and started working on it. It's a little embarrasing I have so many.

Cathy, your needle turn applique skills are unbelievable! Amazing - so much for me to aspire to. Thanks for sharing. Love that toile fabric too. Toile is not a fabric that is abundant in my stash, but I am becoming more and more drawn to it!

I am afraid to even count my UFO's! I did list a few I wanted to finish on my sidebar but promptly started new projects instead...not really. I tried to finish one each month and did pretty well on it so if I follow that for the next 4 years of so I should catch up!

Love the fabrics in the Piece of Cake...I still have some of those plaids and strips hoarded in my stash...

Wow, wow!! You are a master at needleturn. I just love both of these quilts. They are gorgeous and will most likely go in a special place when you are done. As for me, I have way too many UFO's.

I think we should start a UFO swap where you send your UFO to some one and they send theirs back once compleated you post back home. Although I would need alot of partners as I have alot of unfinished UFO's.
Good luck Hugs Bec

I opened the blog and said in awe, "Oh, Cathy!" Love both of these projects. I love toiles, too, and that is a gorgeous one!

Seven weeks! My goal is to be UFO free by the END of 2010, but I'll have to work quickly -- LOL.

Hi Cathy
I just love your UFO's I have that Piece o cake book too and it is on my list for one day :-) Adore the toile! Love the other quilt too. Now how many UFO's do I have, well I do not want to count. They are all waiting patiently for when I get to them. Only one more year 12 exam to be done in our house. Year 11 exams and all the main tension hopefully will be gone. Hope to get my CWBQ out tonight for a little stitching. Cheers
Lynne

WOW - do you have the most beautiful UFO's...
This is not the first time around, that your quilts make me speechless..... wow.....

WOW - needleturn applique!! How beautiful and amazing is your applique. I am in awe as well. I have yet to do needleturn but I am sure I will love it as I love handsewing the binding to the back of quilts. I presume this is the same stitch?
Inspirational!!

Wow the toile background is lovely. Now that's a lotta leaves! Very beautiful. I have a fondness for Dr. Seuss!

Your Mulberry Leaves quilt is just beautiful - I wish I had the patience for applique. I haven't been game to join the UFO challenge - I seem to be starting more projects than finishing and joining in would mean putting binding on a number of quilts.

I hope your goal is met! That's such a neat milestone to reach for.

Your quilts are beautiful and the plaid in the flower is just too much fun!

Hope all are well and happy!
Blessings!

I love the toile fabrics!

Hmmm, ......... I think I would need till the end of next year to finish my UFOs!!

What gorgeous UFOs you have! I've always loved that Piece O' Cake design (well, which of theirs DON'T I love?). Your projects are gorgeous. I groan under the weight of MANY UFOs. I didn't join Jacquie's effort because I knew I would never get any of them done before the end of the year. But, bravo to anyone who does!

I just love Mulberry Leaves, went and checked out the book, I think I need to order that one.
Your work as always is gorgeous.

Wow Cathy! You are simply amazing! I think your projects are wonderful and you have done such a beautiful job on your applique.

I will never admit how many UFO's I have. But, what do you consider a UFO? I have boxes with material and patterns but no sewing on them yet. I kind of consider them UFO's.

They are both lovely. I like them both. The red and white one is something U have not seen before. Do I dare and say it. I do not have a single UFO. I always love Piece O'Cake designs. Yours is nice and crisp.

julieQ said...

Love all your red!! Red, gorgeous, red. And UFO's....hmmm, I made a list and checked everything I needed to actually complete the project, and made a plan. Good luck with yours too!

Those are both lovely quilts! I love your fabrics and, of course, your applique is wonderful. I can't wait to see them finished...should I hold my breath?

Vivian said...

I'll feel like a happy quilter if I can get my UFOs done by the middle of next year. I always have good intentions, but then a new project comes along, and it's new and more exciting, and the UFOs remain untouched. I need an attitude change, I fear. Those poor UFOs deserve a chance.

Absolutely love your 4-block appliqued Q. It's drop dead gorgeous!

Such a chocolate box of gorgeous UFO's Cathy!! If only my to do pile was as stunning!

Well keeping these beauties in the cupboard is a crime. They look so beautiful together - lovely Christmas colours. Come on Cathy - you can do it.

UFO's? I have way tooooo many, but slowly, but surely am getting them done. Your two tops are just lovely and they will be wonderful once they are all finished. I'll be checking back to see your progress.

As I was looking at your UFOs I found myself thinking about wanting to make them too rather than thinking about completing a UFO. ;-) They combine two of my favorites, red and applique. Cathy, they're wonderful!

ranette said...

Cathy I'll finish off those 2 ufo's but I'd have to keep them if I did...lol :o) Love both of these quilts and that red toile is amazing!!!

I would never, ever tell how many ufo's I have because a lady never tells.....

I know, I've been really wanting to join Jacquie. Not going to happen. But I'm going to try not to start new things next year so I can finish a few things. Love your work. Awesome always.
