The lighter Coal background....
My photo's aren't the best, but I'm happy now, the darker grey really does make the bright colours stand out well.
I also received in the mail a fabulous Kona Cotton colour chart, sent to me so generously by the wonderful Janet from Quiltsalott.
Thank you so much Janet, this will make choosing colours for future quilts so much easier, and how wonderful to put fabrics in my stash next to the colours in the chart to see what solids will complement the best.
Look at all those beautiful colours...the chart is so long I can't get it all in the photo!!!
Have you checked out the SEWN giveaways lately? They are opening up a new giveaway each day, and there are some beautiful things over there, don't miss out.

Sarah at the The Last Piece is giving away some gorgeous gifts too, go and see if you can win something lovely! xo

I love the darker charcoal!
On my screen, in the photos you have taken, both greys appear to have a tinge of purple. They may not have the purple tinge in real life but the combination looks amazing!
Even without the purple tinge it is going to be one vibrant quilt - i love it.
The darker charcoal is perfect! Worth the wait.
Love your choice of background fabric - the dark really makes the colors very vibrant.
I think I too might need to invest in a Kona color chart. Very handy.
Rita
I like the darker background the best also. My friend Sherri has the same color charts and I need to order some too.
You were right to wait for the darker gray. I love it!
Darker is definitely better. I just love it. You all have inspired me to give this project a try too, after the first of the year.
Cheers,

The darker background is definitely my choice. The blocks are going to be amazing-time to get stitching them down now.
The colour chart is brilliant.
I completely agree with you....the darker grey isn't just a lovely color, but it really makes the other colors POP!! I can't wait to see this one all finished, I am sure it will be stunning!!
Beautiful Cathy...
Makes the colours pop!! Perfect!!
The darker grey was worth the wait. I think that color chart will come in handy! Colors can be tricky!!
I look forward to see more pictures of your Jacob's Coat ; )
You were so right about the darker colour, it sure does make the citrus colours pop. It makes me want another JC quilt. Let us know how you tackle the placement of the petals.
great choice with the darker charcoal. The block looks fantastic.
Love the Charcoal and that rich dark blue green in the centre. You colours look fantastic :-)
Cheers
Lynne
Go with the darker grey Cathy - it does make the colour stand out beautifully.
Gorgeous!!! I've had my eye on that color chart. Definitely easier to make those color choices however wouldn't it be lovely to just have a bolt of each on hand?
It was worth the wait.
Huh. There doesn't seem to be too much difference between those grays when compared against each other, but what a difference as backgrounds for your applique! You definitely made the right choice! I recently bought a Kona colour chart and also a Moda Bella one, and they are great! It's amazing how different the same swatch appears on different computer monitors and from different online stores!
It really does look great on the Charcoal Gray! Just perfect! Isn't the Kona color card just wonderful. I am getting excited, I will be getting a bunch more Kona's in my shop next week. I just love them!
Yes, indeed! Your petals really pop on that darker grey. Perfect! Isn't the Kona chart a help?! I need to get an updated one -- a lot of new colors have been added since I got mine. Oh, now you can forge ahead on Joseph's coat!
It was so worth waiting for the new Kona to arrive...love the dark grey!
LOVE the Kona color chart. I have one tucked in alongside my stash of Konas. ; ) Like how the darker grey works for you. Enjoy your weekend and merry stitching!
that color chart is the best thing i own... (although I would like to use different solids sometimes,) it so great to look back on that chart to figure out what I need when I run out...
Either gray is going to look great on your quilt! it's fabulous!!
Wow! The darker charcoal is fabulous!! Maybe I need one of those color charts! Do you have Santa's address??!!??
Blessings,
KT
I think the darker grey makes the the colors POP more. Was the Jacobs coat hard to do? I saw the quilt along at Don't Look Now but was too scared to try it :)
I need to get the Kona color chart...looks like a great resource!
Yep, go with the darker charcoal. It's gorgeous! Your quilt is going to be exquisite!
The dark is realy pretty, makes the colors so vibrant
Just perfect, gald you went with the charcoal! That chart will come in super handy!
The darkerbackground is perfect...great to have the colour chart too!
Love the new gray! I knew you'd be happier with it once I looked at the 2 on my color chart. Try not to drool on your color card as you stare at it dreamily fro hours on end... oh wait, that's me!
It was so nice of her to send you a color card! I've considered buying one...it would be awfully handy and fun!
I do like the darker one better. Brings out the color more...
Much better with the darker background.
Hope all is well with you.
Andi :-)
i love the darker grey too! I can't wait to watch your JC quilt grow.
The colour chart sounds like a great idea!!
Great decision Cathy. That extra depth of grey makes the orange really zing.
Oh yes, The darker grey is perfect! What a difference a few shades make! It's going to look amazing!!
Ooh... love the darker grey... though liked the original as well... grey is wonderful for making colours pop!
Haven't started my Joseph's Coat yet - hopefully in the new year, but am now wondering about using a coloured background for mine instead of white (am going to use 30s reproductions
Also love the colourchart - recently got the Moda Bella solids chart and will get a Kona one next time there is free shipping from o/s!
I love the darker grey!! The colours stand out so much better!
You were right, the darker one is a standout!! I like the Kona chart too. Do you know if they sell them? It would be handy to have one.
