A French General Finish

This quilt was made for a very dear friend of mine, so will always be a special one to me.

The French General fabrics are so beautiful. I came up with this pattern because I only had a small pile of fat quarters of these divine fabrics, plus yardage of the two red ones that I used for the middle stripe...

and for the backing...

The quilting was done using an oyster colour thread and straight line quilting on my sewing machine, as well as some lovely hand quilting in perle 8 in red and taupe (click on pic to see detail).

I am becoming a real fan of quilting using both machine and hand, the quilt still has the lovely look and feel of hand quilting, but the whole process is sped up because half of it is done on the machine.

The binding is done using a cotton linen blend in a putty colour. I haven't used a linen blend for binding before, but it worked very well.

My friend loves her new quilt. There is so much joy in giving quilts isn't there?! xo

Definitely joy in giving quilts, and what a lovely one that is! I like the idea of combining hand and machine quilting for a hand quilted look in less time.

It looks beautiful, love all those reds. I've been combining machine quilting and hand quilting as well, it makes it so much quicker and yet still has the lovely touch of the hand quilting in special parts of the quilt.

French General is one of my favourites too. I have a yd of tournesol as part of backing but seeing yours I am tempted to get more before it runs out! You are so kind to give this to your friend, the quilting goes so well and I am sure she is thrilled!

Aren't you clever! I've used pearl cotton mixed with machine quilting on a block or two of a sampler, but had not previously considered the combo with an all-over design. Thanks for the inspiration.

Isn't this fabric amazingly beautiful. I'm sure your friend adores her new quilt. I bet while you were making it you thought about your friend a lot - all that love is in the quilt.

Lovely, lovely quilt! I love how you let the fabrics be the focus of the quilt (in addition to your quilting, of course) and they just shine! It's a beauty and your friend is one very lucky girl.

The French General fabrics have a wonderful soft and muted look to them. I don't buy much of them but have loved what I did purchase.

I don't really do too much hand quilting any more, but I always love the look. Great job on your quilt.

Hi Cathy, your quilting choice is simply superb, I really like it. I'm a traditional hand quilter, but I think I'll learn from you this mixed-technique. Thank you for sharing your tips and quilts!
