AWOL for Two Great Reasons

Those who may read here regularly (and I'm so thrilled that you do!), may have noticed my sewing and creating has been a little quiet recently. There are two reasons for this....

Firstly, for the past year or so I have found myself at a crossroads (wow, how long does it take for me to cross the road?!). For many, many years I have had an out of control addiction to food, particularly junk food! I came to my crossroads when my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic and if things didn't change I would become diabetic type 2. Of course I have tried many different diets, plans, counselling, etc to try and knock my addiction on the head, but with no long lasting results.

Anyway, I don't want to go on and bore you all to death with the detail, so to cut a long story short, and inspired incredibly by my younger brother (Steve) I have begun to change my life around. Steve also struggled with food and weight for many years and a year ago he joined an online course that changed his world. He has now lost around 56 kgs, has bucket loads of energy and has totally supported me to do the same. So 8 weeks ago I joined the online course, run by a motivational New Zealander Jason Shon Bennett. Since then, I have allowed myself to take the time to learn this new way of eating.

Essentially I have given up sugar, meat, dairy, gluten and processed foods. Wow, you say, what food is left? We (hubby is doing it alongside me and loving it) are living on heaps of green leafy vegs, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, healthy oils etc. It took me about a month to get used to the different way of thinking about food, and initially it was expensive to set up a new pantry, but for me, the proof is in the 'pudding'!! After only two months my energy levels have soared, my skin has cleared up including a chronic skin infection which has now gone, I walk almost everyday (unthinkable 2 months ago) and am starting to love it, I am sleeping better, I have dropped 10 kgs so far and the best for me, my out of control cravings have all but gone! Mmm, definitely worth the effort.

Now that I am in a rhythm with my new lifestyle, I feel it will enhance my sewing and blogging in the future to no end. However there is a second great reason why I am creating less at the moment....

I am getting a studio....woohoo!!! A little while ago we decided to move the cars out of the garage, and move me and all my quilting paraphernalia in! To do that we have spent much time firstly clearing out the garage, then getting in a builder to line it and fix up bits and pieces, and next up it will be my job to paint it!!

This is a before photo, hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be back with the after photo's! I can report there will be lots of shelving for fabric, and I picked up a beautiful cutting table from ebay that will be perfect for the new room (no table photo yet, here's a pic of my cherry tree in shadow instead!!).

So, I do apologize for my lack of sewing and quilting, I do hope you will forgive me and I promise to be back in full force very soon! I am glad I crossed the road to a healthier path, and I plan to come back fully inspired and with energy to spare! xo

As a new quilter I have followed you a few short months, but as a family doctor, I am so very proud. Quilting takes a lot of time and energy, and it's admirable that you focus that energy on your health and longevity for now. I for one will be waiting in the wings for your next post. Congrats. And P.S. I love NZ.

Wow! I am so impressed (and inspired). I think the fact you have lasted this long on your journey shows fantastic commitment and by now you know you can do it. 10kgs is just fabulous too. Wishing you all the best. Keep posting those yummy food pics on IG. I am so amazed you were able to cut out everything cold turkey. What a woman! Don't worry about blogging. Hey, Cathy! Good for you!!! We steered away from processed foods about a year ago, and it makes a huge difference. I dropped 35 pounds just doing that and turning to fresh veggies or fruits instead of snacky things when I got the munchies. (Well, and I walked every day.) My girlfriend was my big inspiration, and she dropped 165 pounds in two years doing that!!! So you're in good company. Keep up the food changes and enjoy that studio! Looking forward to future posts.

You can do it :-) 18 months ago I was in really bad shape and I started to turn things around with one step at a time. I found weighing my cereal (which believe it or not packs a lot more calories than you think) and switching to skimmed milk was really helpful. It turned out I was vitamin D deficient too and once I got treatment for that my energy levels went up and the weight started to come off. I lost 40lbs and have managed to keep it off. I still would like to lose more.. But just that little bit made a big difference. We are all rooting for you!
